Magic the Gathering
Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Magic: The Gathering (MTG), created by Richard Garfield, hasn’t lost any charms that have made it a favorite of nearly twenty million people across the globe. This article will look at the best Blue Cards to get graded when investing in MTG cards. But first… Allow Me to Digress.
I’ve had a love-hate relationship with the game over the years. I always find myself picking it up and putting it down. In the end, I always seem to get sucked right back in. However, even with the game always bringing me back into the Magic realm, staying up-to-date with the current trends and changes in game mechanics has proven difficult. There are so many different decks and builds, and knowing what’s what can send you for a loop.
Color choice is crucial for deck building.
The first choice when building a deck is which colors you’ll use. There are five different colors, each with strengths, weaknesses, and aesthetic appeal. While using all five colors when constructing your deck is terrific, it’s generally more helpful to limit your playing field to two colors or less. This way, you can streamline your strategy and increase your chances of victory.
Be that as it may, our business here today is Blue Magic.
A Brief Background of Blue Cards
Blue MTG Cards have always garnered a fair amount of attention from the Magic Community. Many regard Blue as the most dominant color in the game. Among other strengths, Blue Cards are lauded for their ability to award extra cards and turns, affect tempo, remove spells, and manipulate the library.
Did You Know? With Timetwister, Ancestral Recall, and Time Walk, Blue is the only color observed in the Power Nine!
Now, I know we’re all tired of hearing about OP cards, so let’s not only look at cards that will win you games but will also likely stand the test of time, making for a good investment.
Now, for the meat and potatoes!
What are the best blue deck MTG cards?
#10. Remand
Value $26
An Uncommon card, Remand is a Staple in modern blue decks. However, it is not your traditional counter-spell. Rather than bouncing your opponent’s spell back, this card neutralizes it. What makes Remand so special? For starters, it can be a real game changer.
The secret beauty of Remand is that you can use it on yourself to counter an opponent’s counter, making this card an ace in the hole. Remand allows you to gain tempo without having to compromise your card advantage. The card’s artist, Mark A. Nelson, took an interesting approach to this card, giving it the dark feel a trickster deserves. Remand sits at ten on this list because it’s a card that has great value in-game and on the market. This card is the tenth pick for the best Blue MTG cards to get PSA graded.
#9. Morphling
Value $50
Every Format has a few rare cards players want, and Morphling was that card. A Mythic Rare, Morhphling continues to stand out as one of the best creatures that can be played.
Not only can it attack and block, but it can also cheat death by dodging attacks with evasion. The proclamation of the sixth edition rules marked a turning point for this card, and I can see it gaining value in the future.
Rk Post drew this attractive card and perfectly captured the shape-shifter’s abilities by depicting the creature mirroring its enemy. This card is ranked number nine because of its potential and current value.
#8. Cryptic Command
Value $77
Cryptic Command is Rare and can serve as a format-defining card. This card’s an entire toolbox in one card. An MTG “jack-of-all-trades.” After all, what more could someone possibly want? One well-timed move with this bad boy can cripple an opponent. Not to mention, Cryptic Command is a top-end control card for Blue Deck players who want to focus on playing counters.
Moreover, Cryptic Command is a necessary piece for long games for control and tempo decks and offers a great counter. Illustrator Jason Rainville puts much detail into this card; the robes look alive and genuinely embody the power of this card. At number eight, this card doesn’t exactly burn a hole in your pocket but still makes for an intelligent investment.
#7. Vendilion Clique
Value $95
This Mythic Rare is a card to keep your eye on, let alone one of the best cards you can have in play. With tons of power to throw around, what’s not to love about Vendilion Clique? The card has instant speed, a 3/1 body with evasion abilities, it’s a faerie, and you can target yourself to upgrade your hand.
There’s plenty I could say about this card, but what’s for sure is that Vendilion Clique is a diamond in the rough. The faerie-centered artwork shows you the vibrancy and color characteristic of these creatures.
Illustrator Willian Murai delivers extensive detail into each faerie, giving them all distinct features. Sitting pretty at number seven on our list, it’s currently teetering on the triple-digit value line and will probably see much more value in days to come.
#6. Snapcaster Mage Foil
Value $173
I love this card; I’m not lying when I say that, either. Players who wield the mighty Snapcaster Mage have an array of options when considering how to unleash this Mythic Rare. For one thing, this card is a powerful engine that plays instants and sorceries, making it one of the best creatures in MTG.
Now, the Snapcaster Mage doesn’t offer a huge card advantage, so don’t get too excited. However, the card provides more options that weren’t there beforehand. Rendered by Ryan Alexander Lee, the artwork is beautifully done, highlighting the strength of this dark wizard. While on some lists, this card may be ranked higher, on this list, it sits at six because however valuable, it’s still under $200.
#5. Force of Will
Value $700
Well beyond the triple-digit barrier, Force of Will is a wise choice when investing in a blue deck card. This card’s rarity is Special and might be the best counterspell ever. Often referred to as a card that “ties it all together,” this spell is crucial for self-protection when tapped out of mana.
Force of Will also rewards its player on the draw. That’s right! You can have your cake and eat it with this card because it allows you to keep unfair decks in check and disrupts your opponent’s play at any point in the game. The “genie-Esque” creature in this card is wonderfully drawn using vibrant colors to capture the eye; Terese Nielsen drew it.
This card ended up in the middle of our list, at number five, because of its extreme fluctuations in price but overall rising value.
#4. Timetwister
Value $2,000
To not put the Blue Cards that are members of the elite “Power Nine” would be a smudge on the color’s reputation. With this in mind, let’s consider our first Blue card to carry this honor. Undoubtedly one of the game’s most valuable cards, this Rare card is a death sentence. Even though it allows both players to draw seven brand new cards, chances are the player opposite Timetwister won’t last long enough to enjoy their new hand.
Credit for this card’s image goes to Mark Tedin, who illustrated the utter destruction caused by this card. Valued upwards of three grand, it’s unlikely the value of this card will be going down any time soon, which is why it’s just next to the podium at number four.
#3. Underground Sea
Value $8,000
This legendary land, found in the Limited Edition Alpha set, counts as both a swamp and an island. Per usual land cards, this card is free of mana use but could be considered an extra card. In other words, for players who have certain “deck-breakers,” this card can prove extremely useful.
As far as the artwork goes, Rob Alexander keeps us guessing whether this beautifully serene scene depicts sunrise or sunset. The fact that this card allows both Ancestral Recall and Yawgmoth’s Will to be played is why it’s so OP. Because I didn’t want to move a land card into first or second place, I thought it fitting to give this card third place for its significance.
#2. TIME WALK
Value $2,000
Wouldn’t you like the ability to stop time during a match and take an extra turn? Well, if you’re brandishing an Alpha Series Time Walk card, you probably wouldn’t be asking that question. Simply reading, “Take an extra turn after this one,” this card is a powerful weapon against any adversary.
Crediting Amy Weber for this card’s macabre style, this card is constantly climbing the charts regarding value. I put it at number two because an extra turn is valuable, but, hey, so is six thousand bucks!
Alpha Investments has three Time Walks graded PSA 10 right now on eBay. The asking price is a whopping $100,000! See it for yourself here.
#1. Ancestral Recall
Value $3,000
With the ability to turn tides, this Blue Instant is incredibly powerful. Ancestral Recall lets you draw three cards or force your opponent to draw three. In addition to its incredibly influential powers, the card has an attractive aesthetic appeal.
Mark Poole employed a “Mayanesque” style when drawing up this card. This card climbed to number one on our investment list because it consistently tops value charts and is an all-around great card.
A psa 10 Gem Mint 10 copy sold for $9,250 recently on eBay. That’s a decent profit if you only paid $3,000 for a raw copy and an extra $10 to get graded.
At The End Of The Day
There are many factors at play when determining the value of a card. Furthermore, this list isn’t the definitive source of the best Blue MTG Cards. However, it summarizes some of the best cards you can get when looking for a robust blue deck. It’s also a mix of cards I enjoy with cards that are just too steep in price to be left off this list. It’s also a great list of some of the best Blue MTG cards to get PSA graded.
With 25 years under its belt, and nearly 20 million people playing Magic worldwide, most people are probably curious why it is still so popular today, especially since we live in the technological age.
Does anyone even have time for plain, old trading cards?
The root of Magic has always been its variety and adaptability, giving the player the freedom to go down one of several paths when enjoying the game or just collecting. The card game is addicting and draws players in instantly. The game has made several changes over the years and has always kept the core feel of the gameplay intact. However, it continuously evolves and adapts to bring players a more immersive experience.
Conclusion
If you’re an avid player, a long-time collector, or a new prospector in the market, this list is for you! There’s no denying that Magic: The Gathering will be around for a long time.
I hope it doesn’t outlast me. Wishful thinking, perhaps.
This intriguing and collectible card game will likely continue to make its indelible mark in the trading card industry long after you and I play our “final hand.” With its beautiful and unique art, incredible fan base, and devoted employees, it’s no surprise that Magic stands out as a trailblazer in the Trading Card Industry.
