25 Best Charizard Pokemon Cards – Price Guide & Values

The Ultimate Guide to Charizard Pokémon Card Prices

Greetings, Pokémon enthusiasts and investors! I’m your host from Youtube Graded Card Investor, and today, we’re diving deep into the realm of Charizard Pokémon cards – arguably one of the most iconic and sought-after cards in the Pokémon universe.

The Charizard Phenomenon

Charizard, with its fierce, fiery dragon-like design, has captured the hearts of both young fans and serious collectors. Its value? Well, it’s not just about the card’s aesthetics but its grading. Every Charizard card you’ll see featured on our top list has been vetted, authenticated, and graded by PSA – the leading third-party grading company in the trading card community.

Why Grading Matters

For those new to card collecting, you might ask, “Why grade a card?” Grading provides an objective measure of a card’s condition. A mint condition Charizard can fetch a drastically different price from one with wear and tear.

If you’re lucky enough to have a Charizard card stashed away, and it’s not graded yet, know this: its potential value might not align with market prices until it’s graded. For potential buyers, acquiring cards that are already PSA-graded ensures you’re getting what you pay for.

Top Tips for Charizard Collectors and Investors

  1. Get It Graded: If you believe you have a valuable Charizard card, submit it to PSA. A high grade can significantly increase its value and desirability in the market.
  2. Buy Smart: If you’re in the market for a Charizard, invest in cards already graded by PSA. It offers an assurance of the card’s authenticity and condition.
  3. Passion Over Profit: The world of Pokémon card investing is thrilling, but always remember the golden rule: Collect what genuinely resonates with you and only spend within your means. The joy of the hobby comes first!

Black Star Charizard Staff Cards

In line with past traditions, The Pokémon Company hosted events in conjunction with the release of the 2019 Team-Up set. These events featured specially crafted Staff cards, which were exclusively distributed to participants.

It’s important to note that not all stores received the coveted Charizard cards; some were fortunate to acquire Gyarados, Machamp, or Mewtwo cards instead. Consequently, these Staff cards hold a relatively high level of rarity and are considered prized collectibles.

The Team Up Staff prerelease cards share a striking resemblance with the regular prerelease promos, save for one distinct feature—the gleaming gold Staff stamp adorning the lower left corner of the holographic frame.

PSA Grading Statistics

To date, PSA has expertly evaluated and graded a total of 658 English Staff Charizard holos. Among these, 92 secured the esteemed gem mint 10 designation, 409 were rated as mint 9, while the remaining cards were assessed at PSA 8 or lower.

It’s worth mentioning that there are two other variants to keep an eye out for: the Italian and Spanish versions, both considerably scarcer than their English counterpart.

Next on the list is a stunning and distinctive Ultra Shiny, Full Art Charizard GX card from the 2018 Japanese Sun and Moon set. This particular set, released in Japan, sent ripples of excitement through the Pokémon community, arguably more so than any other modern release.

The set boasts an impressive collection of reprints from earlier editions and boasts a whopping 375 cards in its master set, making it one of the most expansive Pokémon sets to date.

Acquiring this magnificent azure masterpiece in a gem mint condition is becoming increasingly costly as its availability dwindles. Interestingly, it’s proving to be even scarcer than initially anticipated. PWCC Auctions sold this PSA 10 example in October 2023 for an impressive $1,140.

Population Report

At the time of crafting this article, PSA has meticulously graded a total of 2,995 of these Ultra Shiny Charizard cards, with a remarkable 1,980 of them achieving the coveted gem mint status. This figure might appear surprisingly low when compared to the next contender on our list, the Burning Shadows Charizard GX secret rare.

1997 Carddass Vending Cards

Here’s a truly unique Charizard Pokémon card distributed throughout Japan in vending machines. Similarly, Yu-Gi-Oh and Dragon Ball Z cards were available in Carddass vending machines.

Initially, Bandai created vending machines to distribute cards as collectibles. But, as the popularity of Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh grew, they eventually made the cards playable in a game. The first Carddass card was released in 1988 and was based on the Saint Seiya anime series.

Card Details

The front of these prisms screams for attention with the highly reflective prism pattern in the background. Pocket Monsters text is prominently displayed on the bottom in a purple reflective foil finish, complementing the orange prismatic background.

Population Reports

175 of the Carddass Charizards have made their way into PSA for grading. With only 45 found in gem mint 10 conditions, it’s safe to say they are relatively rare in such conditions.

I would expect the prices to increase as the popularity of this early Charizard Pokémon card continues to grow.

In the 2000 Pokémon 1st edition Team Rocket set, collectors can discover the second-ever printed 1st Edition Charizard Pokémon card. What sets this card apart is its distinctive artwork, showcasing an aerial view of Charizard as it soars through the night sky. The Dark Charizard holographic card is not only highly collectible but also incredibly valuable, especially when found in gem mint condition.

These cards were originally printed in the early 2000s, featuring lower attack and hit point values. With a mere 80 HP, it might not be the most formidable card, especially for a Stage 2 Pokémon. However, it remains an excellent addition to any collection.

Population Report

As for population reports, PSA has graded a total of 6,693 of the Dark Charizard 1st edition Rocket holographic cards. Among these graded cards, a select 526 have achieved a PSA 10 rating, making them part of an exclusive club. An example of this Dark Charizard, graded PSA 10, was sold by PWCC Auctions in August 2023 for an impressive $3,840. Additionally, there are 2,803 PSA 9-rated cards available in the market, typically fetching prices between $500 and $700.

When it comes to Charizard’s 2004 EX card, it boasts one of his most potent attacks with Burn Down dealing a hefty 200 damage. While it does require sacrificing five energy cards, the odds are high that the target Pokémon will be knocked out, leaving your opponent in awe. The 2004 EX holo card stands as one of the top choices for playing and collecting Charizard cards, and due to their rarity, their market values soar.

Total PSA 10 Supply

Let’s take a closer look at the PSA Population Report. Surprisingly, PSA has examined just 1,822 of these Fire Red Leaf Green Charizard holos. Among these, only 220 have earned the coveted gem mint 10 grade, and 513 are in mint 9 condition. This dual rarity factor highlights that these cards are both challenging to come by and challenging to secure top grades for.

What are they worth?

The value of PSA 10 examples reached a peak of $8,300 back in February 2021; however, it has gradually settled to an average of around $4,000. PSA 9 specimens typically change hands for prices ranging from $1,200 to $1,800, cementing this card as one of Charizard’s most valuable offerings in mint condition.

The most recent PSA 10 example sold on eBay in September 2023 for $4,200.

Because of the scarcity and difficulty of grading, they are highly collectible.

PSA graded 1,789 of these with a mere 80 grading gem mint 10 condition. PSA 9 mint condition cards have the highest supply with 702 and PSA 8 NM-MT cards have 601 in supply.

2016 XY Staff Prerelease

2016 Pokémon XY Charizard Staff Prerelease cards were given to a limited number of distributors that held prerelease XY events in 2016. The cards with the Staff stamp were intended to be given to the staff members or judges who helped run the event. They weren’t all Charizards, though.

Staff cards look identical to the promo Charizard cards except for the gold Staff stamp on the bottom left of the holographic box.

Four Pokémon staff prelease cards were given out, including Mewtwo, Blastoise, Machamp, and Charizard. Stores were given just one of the four, with Charizard being the most valuable.

Population Report

The number of Charizard Staff cards produced is unknown, but we see that 518 have been submitted to PSA. Of those, only 38 are in gem mint condition. Making these cards in perfect condition is very rare. PSA 9 examples sell between $1,300 and $2,000 while the PSA 10 shown above sold at auction by PWCC in September 2023 for $6,600.

2002 Legendary Collection Set

The Pokémon trading card game’s Legendary Collection expansion introduced some fresh concepts to enthusiasts. Among its standout features was the Reverse Holofoil print.

In a twist from the usual Holofoil cards where the artwork gleams, these cards showcase a holographic shine everywhere except the artwork area. This design not only set them apart but also added allure with a fireworks-like holographic pattern, making them dazzle to the eye.

Population Report

From 2002 till now, out of the 2,108 Charizard reverse foil cards that collectors have found and sent for grading, only 81 received the highest grade of PSA gem mint. Considering how visually appealing these cards are, this is a surprisingly low number.

Because there are so few PSA 10 examples, it is challenging to determine a value, however, PWCC Auctions sold the PSA 10 above in June 2022 for $10,200. A mint PSA 9 example recently sold on eBay for $2,800 and a PSA 4 sold for $500. So, needless to say, these are valuable in any condition.

With most cards grading NM-MT 8 and mint 9, these are relatively challenging to find in gem mint conditions. Charizard’s poke-body ability to use any energy as fire energy makes this card useful in combination decks.

PSA 9s sell between $650 to $800, while the PSA 10 example shown above sold at auction in October 2023 by PWCC for $11,100. It is currently one of just forty-nine examples that is graded gem mint condition.

Coming in at number 8 is the 2003 Skyridge Charizard Holo. The artwork in this set is exceptionally detailed, unique, and attractive, making it a highly collectible set.

We get up close and personal with Charizard, whose claws appear to pop off the card. He has a fierce look on his face, with his fiery tail waving in the background. It appears as if he were preparing for a dragon tail attack.

Population Reports

Proving to be rarer than his prior cards, the Skyridge Charizard has had just 956 submitted to PSA. With only 228 landing a gem mint 10 grade, you have about a 24% chance of success if you submit one yourself.

2006 Gold Star Set

Holding steady at number 4 on this list is the 2006 EX Dragon Frontiers Charizard Gold Star holo #100. This is the first set where the Pokémon are shown coming out of the character box, appearing to pop off the card. Another unique feature of this is that all Pokémon were basic Pokémon and had already evolved.

This is the only Charizard card where he requires darkness energy for his attacks instead of his usual fire energy. It’s quite a unique card that makes him almost an utterly different Pokémon.

Population Reports

2,556 Gold Star Charizard cards have been submitted to PSA, with only 99 graded gem mint 10. Another exceedingly difficult set to grade with only 4% of cards being in gem mint 10 conditions. Very tough to get and a great investment option. Consider the lower grades as well.

#3. 1995 Japanese Topsun Charizard Holofoil #6

Only for the die-hard Charizard collectors is the 1995 Japanese Topsun Holofoil. The cracked ice pattern background is unique to this particular set, making this card shine. 1995 is related to the Nintendo trademark and not the production of the card.

Topsun cards were printed in 1997 since Pokémon didn’t exist until 1996. These were the first Pokémon cards ever printed, which should make them the most valuable, right?

Population Reports

These holofoils are both incredibly rare and difficult to grade. PSA has seen just 79 of them and declared only 16 in gem mint condition. Currently, there is one on eBay listed for $10,000 or the best offer with 106 watchers.

We’ll have to see what the seller lets it go for. With only 16 in existence and the rising popularity of this set, I wouldn’t let it go for anything less than $5,000.

#2. 1996 Japanese Pokemon (No Rarity Symbol) Charizard Holo #6
PSA 9 sold for $28,100

1996 Pokemon Japanese basic Charizard holo No Rarity Symbol #6 graded PSA 9
1996 Japanese No Rarity Symbol Charizard Holo #6

1996 Japanese No Rarity Symbol

The very first Pokemon Game cards were printed in the 1996 Japanese set. The cards without a rarity symbol in the bottom right-hand corner are considered the 1st edition examples.

The 1996 Japanese base set was always considered to have only one print run until recently. These newly discovered (no rarity) cards are the first print run of the Japanese base set, the first Pokemon cards ever printed.

Referred to as no rarity by collectors, these first print cards are signified by a lack of rarity symbols in the lower right-hand corner of the card. These rarity symbols are present in the general print run of the Japanese base set and in every other Pokemon card printing set to come, except for promos.

Card Details

No rarity cards are tough to find. It’s speculated that these cards were only printed for 1 to 2 weeks before the print run was switched to have rarity symbols, and nobody knows where they came from, whether it be short packs, base set packs, boxes, first print decks, etc.

1996 Japanese Set

It is unclear how many of the 1996 Japanese Pokemon cards were printed. By examining the population reports, I have found that only roughly the same amount as the 1999 1st edition cards have been submitted to PSA for grading so far. Meaning the print run could be considerably lower than most collectors realize.

Card Details

The 1996 Japanese Charizard holographic layout is different from the 1999 design. You can see the horizontal energy requirements are different than the block shape on the 1999 card. The holographic part and art are similar, though.

Investment Potential

The 1996 Japanese Charizard holographic is his “true rookie card.” It is the very first Pokemon Game card printed. The print run seems similar to the 1999 1st edition print run, which would make sense due to the lack of a Pokemon fan base in 1996.

1999 Pokemon 1st Edition Charizard Holo #4

The 1999 1st Edition Shadowless holographic Charizard #4 is often regarded as the Holy Grail of Pokémon cards. In PSA gem mint condition, it holds a special place in the hearts of Pokémon enthusiasts and collectors alike.

The significance of this card lies not only in its rarity but also in its role in shaping the Pokémon franchise. Without Charizard, Pokémon might not have achieved the level of popularity it enjoys today.

Why are the 1st Edition Charizard Holos Valuable?

What makes this particular Charizard card even more valuable is its unique combination of features. Being part of the very first English set ever printed makes it exceptionally rare. Furthermore, it’s the inaugural English Charizard card, which adds to its historical importance. Unlike later editions, it boasts both the 1st edition stamp and the shadowless design, making it a true collector’s gem.

PSA Population Reports

The PSA population report plays a pivotal role in assessing its value. Out of the 4,216 1st Edition Holo Charizard cards, only 124 have achieved the coveted PSA gem mint 10 grade. This rarity factor sets it apart, with less than a 0.03% chance of obtaining a PSA 10 grade. This scarcity is unparalleled in comparison to other sets.

Investment Potential

In terms of investment potential, the 1st edition Charizard stands as one of the best Pokémon cards to invest in. Over the years, its sales prices have consistently risen. In 2016, gem mint 10 copies were selling for around $5,000 each. Fast forward three years, and they are commanding prices upwards of $240,000. The card’s low population combined with the fact that most of the product has been opened has raised awareness about its rarity.

Final Thoughts on the 1st Edition Holo

Whether you’re a serious collector or simply looking for a valuable piece of Pokémon history, the 1999 1st edition shadowless holo Charizard is an exceptional choice. Even if you’re on a budget, the prices for mint 9 versions have increased along with virtually every other grade. So, don’t hesitate; if you’ve been considering adding this iconic card to your collection, now might be the perfect time to make your move.

1999 Pokemon Unlimited Charizard Shadowless Holo #4

Shadowless Version

The third most expensive Charizard Pokémon card is the base set shadowless. This set was printed shortly after the 1st edition with slightly more print runs. The availability is still scarce compared to the unlimited set but not as rare as the 1st edition.

Card Details

On the base set shadowless, you’ll notice the 1st edition logo is gone. It doesn’t seem like much of a difference to the beginner, but for the die-hard collector, it’s a different card. Furthermore, having no shadow on any Pokémon card makes it more collectible than with shadow.

Investment Potential

Most Pokémon card collectors are familiar with the words shadowless and 1st edition, and when they see a Charizard with one or the other, they know it’s valuable. This will spread more and more across other collectible Pokémon cards, increasing their value.

Recently, a PSA 10 Charizard from the 1999 Base Set Unlimited was sold for $9,300 at PWCC Auctions in August 2023. This sale highlights the card’s investment potential, as it continues to appreciate in value. For investors looking to enter the Pokémon card market, Charizard’s holofoil card from the 1999 Base Set Unlimited is a valuable asset with a promising future.

Conclusion

In this article, I went over the top 25 Charizard Pokemon cards. The most valuable Charizard card is his 1996 Japanese Pokemon holographic with no rarity symbol. Not only is this the very first Charizard holo card, but it is also scarce due to the error of not having the rarity symbol. Due to the rarity, it is unclear what the value of a PSA 10 example is. A PSA 9 sold for $60,100 in September 2020; however, one year later, another auction ended for $28,100.
