2016 XY Evolutions Staff Pre-release
Mewtwo Pokemon Card Holographic #51
Last sold PSA 9 price $350
Overview
In 2016, Wizards of the Coast awarded certain distributors unique Pokemon cards known as a staff prerelease. They were given to stores that held prerelease events for the Evolutions set and intended to be given to the helpers or employees of the event.
Only four Pokemon from this set have the staff stamp on them. Machamp, Gyarados, Charizard, and Mewtwo were all chosen to be the staff Pokemon. Each distributor was given just one of the four, with a quantity of seven in total.
Population Report
Of the four Pokemon cards to get, Charizard was the best, but Mewtwo was second in popularity. It shows in the PSA population report and the auction prices page.
You better get on the ball if you’re in the market for a staff Mewtwo Pokemon card. They are very difficult to find in raw condition; forget about a PSA 10 because only 5 exist. If one does pop up, prepare to break the bank.
#20
2017 Sun & Moon Shining Legends GX Secret Rare
Mewtwo Pokemon Card #78
PSA 10 sold for $372
Overview
The 2017 Shining Legends set has five secret rares. Of those five are three Mewtwo, with the #78 GX being the most valuable. This is the first year Wizards of the Coast has produced these rainbow foil cards, which have been rising in popularity since their debut in October 2017.
Another interesting fact about Shining Legends is how they were sold in packs of three, collectors sets, or trainer boxes. Individual packs were not available.
Population Report
Mewtwo’s #78 Secret Rare currently holds the highest population record in this set, with 1,244 submitted to PSA. Only 652 were declared to be in gem mint condition. Which is about half the cards submitted.
You should consider sending it to PSA for grading if you have one. The popularity and value of these rare secret cards will surely rise over the next few years.

Furthermore, most Carddass sets come with holo variations that make the cards shine and increase collectability. At number 150 in the set, Mewtwo is the second to last card and is just one of sixteen prisms.
#13
1996 Pocket Monsters Carddass Vending
Mewtwo Prism Pokemon Card #150
Average selling price $930
Japanese Bandai Carddass Vending Mewtwo.
1996 is the second year of the Carddass Japanese set. There are two versions of Mewtwo, including a red border and a green border. Both variations carry the same value and do not appear to have a difference in rarity.
Population Report
PSA graded 477 of the 1996 Carddass Vending Mewtwo Prism cards, with 61 grading gem mint 10, 174 mint 9, and the remaining PSA 8 or less. With less than 100 PSA 10 gem mint condition examples, these are ultra-rare and valuable.

PSA 10 sold for $227
Team Rocket Returns Mewtwo EX holo #99.
This is Mewtwo’s second-ever 1st edition card printed and is a different Pokemon than the base set Mewtwo. We see his infamous Juxtapose ability, Hypnoblast, and Psyburn attacks on this card. Furthermore, his attacks offer more damage, and hit points have an extra 10 points. The 1999 Japanese version is much more affordable and should not be overlooked. Consider picking one up today at a bargain.
Population Report
Having been printed in 2000, we see a more populated report with 390 total cards submitted. Of those submitted, just 162 were in PSA 10 gem mint conditions. Still, a very small amount when compared to his other cards.
This one is a must-have for your collection. Being his second printed 1st edition card and donning a different design makes it highly collectible.

2003 EX Ruby & Sapphire
Mewtwo Pokemon Card Holographic #101
Recently sold for $1,807
EX Ruby & Sapphire Pokemon cards.
In the 2003 Pokemon EX Ruby & Sapphire set, we get a unique and one-of-a-kind design. Unlike any other Pokemon card printed, the Ruby & Sapphire Mewtwo card has a border with a highly reflective silver finish with what appears to be shimmering precious metals blended in.
This is the first Mewtwo EX Pokemon card ever printed and is slowly increasing in popularity as more EX and GX cards are printed. Getting your hands on one of these will be quite tricky due to their extreme elusiveness, especially in gem mint conditions.
Population Report
Since the set’s debut in June of 2003, only 192 Mewtwo EX cards have been submitted to PSA for grading. Astonishingly, only 37 of those were in gem mint condition. If you can pick one up, you better jump on it!
#7
1995 Japanese Topsun Holofoil
Mewtwo Pokemon Card #150
Recently sold for $2,247
Topsun Japanese Mewtwo holofoil #150 graded PSA 10
Another attractive Mewtwo Pokemon card can be found in the 1995 Japanese Topsun set. These were distributed throughout Japan in sticker-type vending machines. Although they were intended for collecting only, these are still highly collectible, partly because of the beautiful and colorful artwork on the cards.
Furthermore, 1995 is not the year because Pokemon didn’t exist until 1996. These were said to be printed and distributed in 1997. Here’s a link for more information.
Population Report
If you want rare, then this is your card. With only 39 submissions of the Mewtwo holofoil and just 9 being in gem mint condition, this is one of the rarest Mewtwo cards to own. This is one of the rarest Mewtwo Pokemon cards in PSA gem mint condition with such a low pop report.
They are very difficult to find in near-perfect conditions, mainly because they come from Japan and were never thought to hold much value until recently.
#6
2002 Expedition
Mewtwo Pokemon card holo #20
PSA 10 sold for $2,341
2002 Expedition holos
As you’ll see, 2002 was an excellent year for Pokemon card collectors. Three iconic sets were printed, and the 2002 Expedition was one of them. Here we have a genuinely one-of-a-kind Mewtwo Pokemon card with those horizontal lines on the side. Do you know what those are for?
The Pokemon Expedition set was the first set compatible with the Nintendo e-Reader peripheral. The design of these cards is slightly offset to make room for the “Dot-Code” strip… a barcode that, when scanned by the e-Reader, displays the Pokemon’s data, unlocks attacks or allows you to play a minigame or music.
Population Report
There are currently just 39 PSA 10 examples of the Mewtwo Expedition holographic in rotation. Which, of the 152 cards submitted, is a relatively low number. How many collectors are holding onto their copy, and how many have already submitted one?
One can only speculate how many copies exist with an unknown print run. For now, if you’re an owner of one of those thirty-nine gem mint copies, I would hold fast to it.
#5
2002 Legendary Collection Reverse Foil
Mewtwo Pokemon Card #29
Recently sold for $2,745
2002 Legendary Collection reverse foil cards.
I’m not quite sure how this card is selling for so little. The 2002 Legendary Collection reverse foils are undoubtedly the most impressive and exciting Pokemon cards printed before 2015. Not only do we get a photo variation of Mewtwo, but we also have that firework background and borders exploding off the card.
Wizards of the Coast released this set only in the U.S. and not in Japan, and it was the birth to reverse holographic cards. The print run is unknown, but they are one of the more challenging cards to locate.
Population Report
Only 145 of the Mewtwo reverse holos have been submitted to PSA. Of that small amount, only 36 were declared to be in gem mint condition. Because most of this product has been opened, we can expect that number to stay the same.
So the value will skyrocket in the next couple of years as Pokemon card collecting becomes more popular.
#4
2002 Neo Destiny Shining (1st Edition)
Mewtwo Pokemon Card #109
PSA 10 sold for $4,200
Overview
Collectors go crazy over the Shining Pokemon, and Mewtwo is no exception. Like the Japanese version, Mewtwo has a holographic finish, not the character background.
A significant distinction between the English and Japanese versions is the energy layout for the Psyburst attack. The English version has them stacked, while the Japanese version has them horizontally aligned.
In addition to the energy, the attack points are much more prominent in the English version. We also have the 1st edition logo in this set, Mewtwo’s third 1st edition card.
Population Report
Far more English copies have been submitted than their Japanese counterpart. Breaking the 300 threshold with 303 total submitted, the English Shining Mewtwo crushed the Japanese population. These are rising and should be at the top of your must-have list.
2001 Japanese NEO 4 Shining
Mewtwo Pokemon Card #150
Recently sold for $5,500
Overview
WOTC created an instant fan favorite with the Shining Pokemon. These cards are unique because the Mewtwo is shining in foil instead of the box around the character. Shining cards are tough to pull and highly valuable and collectible.
Additionally, this is one of Mewtwo’s cards where one lightning energy is needed to activate his Reflect Shield attack, and fire energy is required for Psyburst.
Population Report
PSA has graded 152 copies of the Japanese Shining Mewtwo. With only 40 being in gem mint condition, the Japanese example in the near-perfect condition is rare. For those die-hard Mewtwo collectors, this will be a must-have on your list.
#3
2006 EX Holon Phantom Gold Star
Mewtwo Pokemon Card Holographic #103
Last sold for $6,750
2005 Japanese Gold Star
Mewtwo Gift Box holo #002
Last sold for $891
2006 Pokemon Gold Star Mewtwo Holon Phantom holo.
Collectors love Gold Star cards as they feature art by illustrator Masakazu Fukuda. He created this set himself and created the first Pokemon card where the Pokemon come out of the character box.
Another feature that makes Gold Stars collectible is how elusive they are. When opening a 2006 EX Holon Phantom booster box, you could expect to pull just 1 Gold Star from the entire box.
Population Report
PSA has graded 640 Gold Star Mewtwo Pokemon cards to date. Of the 640 graded, just 107 were found in gem mint condition. With a limited supply and the Gold Star popularity, this is one of Mewtwo’s more desired cards.
#2
1996 Japanese No Rarity Symbol
Mewtwo Pokemon card Holographic #150
Last sold for $15,750
1996 Japanese no rarity symbol Pokemon cards.
If you want to get technical, this is the first Mewtwo Pokemon card printed. Looking closely at the bottom right, you’ll see no rarity symbol. The printing department accidentally omitted the rarity symbol on the first print run. It is said to have been corrected after 2-3 weeks of printing.
This error is relatively new to the Pokemon community and has tremendously increased the values of cards with no rarity symbol.
How rare are the Pokemon cards with no rarity symbol?
Aside from being exceptionally rare, they are very difficult to find in high grades. Because no one knew about the rarity of these cards, they paid no attention to preserving them. Of the 130 submitted to PSA, only 9 were found in gem mint condition.
#1
1999 Pokemon Game (1st Edition)
Mewtwo holo #10
PSA 10 sold for $20,100
1999 Pokemon Game 1st edition set.
Here it is. The Holy Grail of Mewtwo Pokemon cards. Having no shadow on the character box and boasting that notorious 1st edition stamp. 1st edition Pokemon cards will always be the most valuable because they were the first English set and have a much lower print run than the unlimited version.
To the novice collector, this card looks exactly like the #5 and #13 cards on this list, but to the seasoned collector, they are entirely different. It’s all about that 1st edition stamp and shadowless character box.
How many Mewtwo 1st edition cards are in PSA’s population report?
1,467 1st Edition Mewtwo Pokemon cards have been submitted to date. Of those submitted, just 81 were found in gem mint condition.
1999 Shadowless
Mewtwo holo #10
PSA 10 sold for $4,587
1999 Pokemon Shadowless print run.
Unless you’re new to Pokemon cards, you know the base set has three “print runs.” The Shadowless run was second and rarer than the unlimited. However, it is not as rare as the 1st edition card. Because this is the first Mewtwo Pokemon card set printed and the second rare print run, it will always fetch a premium price. Collectors see the lack of shadow and know the rarity and value are there.
How many are in PSA’s population report?
Surprisingly, the shadowless Mewtwo has the lowest PSA 10 population, with only 59. However, there are roughly 100 more submitted than the 1st edition cards. The shadowless Mewtwo are relatively rare, notably in gem mint condition.
1999 Unlimited
Mewtwo holo #10
PSA 10 sold for $1,000
1999 Pokemon Unlimted print run.
The final most valuable Mewtwo card from 1999 is Mewtwo’s base set holo from the 1999 unlimited set. Although it’s not as rare as the 1st edition or shadowless, it still holds value among collectors because it’s part of the first set.
Being the first of its kind is evident by how it only has 60HP, which in today’s decks would not last very long. Furthermore, the Psychic attack only provides 10 extra damage as opposed to 20 per energy attached to the defending Pokemon.
Population Report
Surprisingly, only 2,082 of the Mewtwo holos from the unlimited set have been submitted to PSA. Of those submitted, just 353 reside in a gem mint 10 case. This leaves us with a 17% chance of success if submitting one yourself.
With those odds, you would think the value would be higher. A gem mint copy of a Mewtwo Pokemon card may be one of his best sleeper cards compared to the others on this list.
Conclusion
Mewtwo is one of the most powerful Pokemon and is a fan favorite to many Pokemon fans. There are numerous Mewtwo Pokemon cards available to collect. These are the top 15 Mewtwo Pokemon cards that I have found. Let me know what your favorite Mewtwo cards are in the comments below. Also, let me know if I missed any cards that should be added to the list.
