Best Blue Cards for Commander Format

#10. Jace, Vryn’s Prodigy

Best Blue Commander MTG cards Jace Vryn's Prodigy magic the gathering

Shop Jace, Vryn’s Prodigy on eBay

Great with graveyard based decks

The number 10 card on our list is the Jace, Vryn’s Prodigy. This is a really great card for most blue decks but works really well in graveyard based decks. The ability to draw a card then discard a card allows you to cycle through your library until you find what you need.

Once you flip him to Jays, Telepath Unbound, you have immediate synergies with graveyard based decks. This card allows you to recast instants and sorceries from your graveyard which is very valuable.

#9. Baral, Chief of Compliance

best blue mtg commander cards to get baral, chief of compliance number 9

Shop Baral, Chief of Compliance on eBay

Baral, Chief of Compliance holds the number 9 spot for one reason, he’s a absolute monster. Just look at the artwork of him. Assasin’s Creed mixed with Scorpion from Mortal Kombat? Anyway, Baral is super powerful and difficult to deal with in 1 vs. 1.

He fits in almost every control deck

He allows all of your spells instants and sorcery to cost 1 less. Whenever a spell or ability you control counters a spell, you may draw a card. He fits in pretty much every single control deck, even decks that play creatures.

#8. Glen Elendra Archmage

best blue mtg commander cards to get glen elendra archmage number 8

Shop Glen Elendra Archmage on eBay

The ability to counter a non-creature spell for only one blue and have the creature come back with persist is fantastic. But, when coupled with a creature like Sage of Fables, which allows you to negate the -1/-1 counter, Glen Elendra Archmage can become a real threat if left unchecked.

Pros

Glen Elendra Archmage is awesome because she has Persist. Her activated ability is just 1 blue and you get to counter a non-creature spell, which is incredible. It gets around so many other control decks that usually hoard counter spells but  she gets around them.

Cons

A major downfall to Glen Elendra is the fact that in order to cast her you have to spend four mana and still have enough mana left to use her ability. Obviously she’d be nuts if you could just sacrifice your counter spell for free but you’ll have to pay the mana each time.

Battle with confidence with Glen Elendra

She is a a very annoying card for your opponent and a force to be reckoned with. She is our number 8 MTG best blue commander. Consider purchasing the mighty and powerful Glen Elendra for your deck commander and battle with confidence.

#7. Consecrated Sphinx

MTG Best Blue Commander Cards consecrated sphinx

Shop Consecrated Sphinx on eBay

Number seven is Consecrated Sphinx. One of the best and most explosive draw related cards because every time an opponent draws a card you draw two cards. If there are two of these in the game, let’s say your opponent has one and you have one, someone has to concede. One of the two players has to basically say “okay, I’m not going to be drawing any cards”.

You do this to prevent both players just continuing to draw themselves, out which is going to happen. For this reason alone,  many MTG players despise the Consecrated Sphinx.

Great card for playing with 4 players

With 6 casting cost, it’s not the cheapest. If you’re playing a four player game and you whip the Consecrated Sphinx out, players will be hesitant to go out on their own. You’ll be netting 6 extra cards per turn!

#6. Deadeye Navigator

Shop Deadeye Navigator on eBay

Whether you love him or you hate him, the shear fact is that Deadeye Navigator is an extremely powerful creature. He might even be the most powerful creature in this entire format, don’t quote us on that. He’s expensive to cast and the effect is mana intensive but almost always game breaking.

Pros

We understand that he’s pure combo bait. When Deadeye is by himself, he does very little. That being said once he’s paired up with strong creatures, he goes bananas in terms of value.

Cons

Deadeye navigator by himself does literally nothing as a card. He’s a six mana 5/5 that has to wait until something else comes into the field. Which, if you have no hand and no board is not the kind of card you want to top deck into.

Strong enter the battlefield effect

A good portion of playable creatures in commander have a strong enter the battlefield effect. Having access to these effects four or five times a turn is broken. Even if it’s as simple as Eternal Witness or Flametongue Kavu.

If you’re in blue and have creatures, you’re likely playing Deadeye Navigator.

#5. Phyrexian Metamorph

MTG Best Blue Commander Cards phyrexian metamorph artifact creature

Shop Phyrexian Metamorph on eBay

Out of all the clone creatures Phyrexian Metamorph is easily the best. It barely slides by Clever Impersonator for the sole fact that it’s also considered an artifact. The Phyrexia mana technically means it can be casted for just 3 mana and 2 life. So, it is a little bit cheaper there.

It has the benefit of being an artifact

Additionally, there are a ton of red cards that synergize with artifacts and the graveyards. Metamorph is just way better when it comes to interactions off the field, in your decks,  in your graveyard or in your hand even. Definitely use that as a consideration when choosing between Phyrexian Metamorph and Celver Impersonator.

#4. Pact of Negation

Shop Pact of Negation on eBay

Pact of Negation is great in commander because every single deck that plays blue can play it. When playing heavy control, you want a zero mana counter spell to protect your plays, your turn and your combos. Using Pact of Negation is the best way to accomplish this.

Protect Your Combos

You have to follow your upkeep and tap down five mana, but it’s really worth it when you can stop something really bad from happening for just zero mana. Protect your combo’s with Pact of Negation. It’s our number 4 MTG best blue commander Cards to have in your blue commander deck.

#3. Mystical Tutor

Best blue Cards in Commander Format MTG Building EDH Decks mystic tutor

Shop Mystical Tutor on eBay

Number three on the list is Mystical Tudor. We chose this card as our third best because instant speed tutors for one mana are crazy. The fact that it can search up an instant or sorcery is a great tool to have. Remember,  this is blue, there tends to be a ton of them, Packed of Negation for instance.

At the very worst you just use this to get something like a demonic tutor which will allow you to search for something else. At its absolute worst it’s gonna get you a tutor that can search up something even better.

You can have interactions with Mystical Tutor

It also has the fact that you can have interactions. Tap a creature in response after playing a mystical tutor then you get the card that you put on the top of your deck. You get to play that at instant speed. It’s just a great card to have in your deck.

#2. Cyclonic Rift

Best blue Cards in Commander Format MTG Building EDH Decks cyclonic rift number 2

Shop Cyclonic Rift on eBay

Cyclonic Rift and is, without a doubt, the best wrath effect in the whole format. Yeah, seven mana instant speed may sound like a lot but, it’s at instant speed. You’re bouncing all nonland permanent’s you don’t control to you to their owners hands. Even at its worst it’s just two mana to bounce all land permanents you don’t control. Which is very underwhelming and you’re most likely never going to do that but if you absolutely have to the option is there.

Very efficient and very effective

Mainly, just the fact that it closes out games super efficiently makes this number two on our list. As annoying and as un-fun as it can be you have to give it credit. It is an extremely efficient removal spell. Bounce removal deals with so much, it deals with indestructible’s, shroud, hex proof just everything.

So, it’s super efficient and it’s super effective and it’s why it’s number two on the list. It’s the best wrath effect in the format.

#1. Rhystic Study

Shop Rhystic Study on eBay

Number one on our list is Rhystic Study, which is up there with some of the best cards in the entire format. With only three mana it sits on the field and your opponents have to spend one more mana in order to keep you from drawing a card for each spell that they cast.

This card is incredibly powerful because even if it’s not going to net you a lot of cards, it’s going to force your opponents to play slower. It’s gonna set them back a turn. It’s gonna keep them from speeding up their game, which is really what you aim to do with a card like this.

It’s one of the most powerful cards in the entire format

The reaction is always different when playing Rhystic Study. Some players will be stubborn and not pay the 1 mana to keep you from drawing cards and some players will. Some players will let you draw a card because they want to hold on to their mana, which will allow you to net a ton of card advantage. Which is why Rhystic Study is the number one MTG best blue cards in commander format.
