Hi everyone, Matt from Graded Card Investor here. Today, we’re diving into the top 20 Mickey Mantle cards recently sold, focusing primarily on PSA 8 grades for their frequent trading and market availability.
I’ll also mention PSA 9 sales of each card for a comprehensive review. We’ll examine values and sales from his 1951 rookie card to the 1968 Topps, noting each card’s supply according to PSA’s data and recent sales prices.
Remember, rarity often drives value, and if you want to invest in any of these Mickey Mantle cards look for cards with a lower supply and then hunt for lower graded examples. This way you’re not competing with big wallets for the finest examples.

1955 Bowman Baseball Card Set
The 1955 Bowman set, known for its unique design, features a color photo within a simulated TV screen border, labeled “Color TV.” This design reflects the mid-1950s rise of televised baseball and color TV. The front includes a white strip with the player’s name in black.
Different wood finishes
Notably, the set offers two “wood finishes” on the TV border, with lighter wood for cards #1-64 and darker for cards #65-320. The photos, all shot in Philadelphia’s Shibe Park, are sharp and well-colored. As Bowman’s final set before Topps’ acquisition, it remains popular among collectors today.

1954 Red Heart Set
The set was released regionally with Red Heart brand dog food. It seems unusual to associate baseball cards with dog food, but this marketing strategy by the John Morrell Company proved successful. The cards were available through a mail-in offer, advertised in Sunday newspaper comic sections. Buyers needed to purchase two cans of Red Heart and send a dime to receive one of the three series of 11 cards.

1953 Bowman Set
The 1953 Bowman Baseball Card Set marked a significant response to Topps’ dominance in the 50s. Bowman introduced larger cards and featured Joe DiMaggio on the wrapper. Its standout feature was the use of actual color photographs, a first in the industry. To manage high production costs, the set was limited to 160 cards but still included many stars.
The design was simple, with just the photo on the front, emphasizing the card’s visual appeal. Innovations included detailed stats on the back and the reintroduction of multiplayer cards, with notable ones featuring Yankees’ stars. This set remains notable for its design and historical value in baseball card collecting.

1953 Topps Set
The 1953 Topps set, influenced by legal disputes with Bowman, was planned for 280 cards but omitted six due to lost contracts. Featuring 2-⅝” x 3-¾” cards with painted player images and color team logos, the set introduced trivia questions, brief stats, and biographies on card backs.
The supply of cards #1-165 is larger compared to the scarcer #221-280. Notably, it includes the last Topps Mickey Mantle card until 1956 due to Bowman’s exclusive rights. Celebrated for its design, the 1953 Topps set is highly valued, especially for cards like Mantle and Willie Mays, known for their aesthetic appeal.
