30 Best Michael Jordan Basketball Cards In-Depth Guide & Values

Michael Jordan Cards: The Blue Chip of Basketball Cards

In the vast expanse of sports card investing, few names stand as tall and shine as brightly as Michael Jordan. Universally recognized as the undisputed GOAT (Greatest of All Time) of basketball, his legacy both on and off the court has transcended generations. For graded card investors looking for an asset that marries nostalgia with undeniable future ROI potential, investing in Michael Jordan basketball cards offers a compelling proposition.

Historical Sales Performance

Recent years have seen a significant upswing in the valuation of Michael Jordan cards. Specific examples underline this trend:

Why Investing in Michael Jordan Cards Is A Solid Bet

  • Everlasting Legacy: Jordan’s impact on basketball and sports culture is unparalleled. Being a six-time NBA champion and five-time MVP, his legacy remains untarnished.
  • Rare and Unique: With limited edition cards, like the 1997 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Green Parallel (only 10 in existence), scarcity ensures that demand outpaces supply.
  • Historical Appreciation: The value appreciation, for instance, of the 1997 Skybox Premium Star Rubies from $5,963 in 2016 to $91,200 in 2022, underscores the investment potential.

Bullish on Michael Jordan

Jordan’s global brand, his ownership of the Charlotte Hornets, and his continued association with basketball keep him in the public eye. His ventures, like the Jordan brand under Nike, continue to thrive, ensuring he remains relevant and influential.

Worth A Small Fortune

As demonstrated, Jordan’s cards, especially those in mint condition, can command prices that rival luxury assets. With proper care and grading, their worth can only go up.

The 1993 Fleer Ultra Scoring Kings inserts are a trip down the ’90s nostalgia lane for many collectors. Representing one of Michael Jordan’s inaugural chase cards, they captivate with a visually striking design, showcasing Jordan executing his signature fadeaway amidst a dynamic lightning backdrop.

Rarity: Found in 1:36 packs of the Fleer Ultra series one hobby boxes, these cards were fairly accessible. With just ten cards in the set, your odds of landing a Jordan were relatively high.

These cards are notorious for fragile edges and vulnerable corners, attributed to their full foil finish. Moreover, unopened packs from the ’90s often lead to “bricking”, where cards adhere together, risking damage and white blotches upon separation.

Value Dynamics: The 1993 Scoring Kings witnessed a remarkable surge recently. A PSA 10 Jordan leaped from an average sale price of $800 to a staggering $21,600 peak. Although prices have since stabilized, they remain impressive at $11,100. Meanwhile, PSA 9 versions typically trade between $1,500 and $2,500.

  • Background & Rarity: The Fusion cards, introduced in 1998 by Fleer within the Molten Metal set, are a continuation of the “Player Portrait” concept with tiny pinholes. These cards are limited, sequentially numbered out of 250, and include even rarer Titanium Fusion parallels limited to 40 copies per player.
  • Grading Statistics: Beckett Grading Services (BGS) has evaluated 82 of Jordan’s Fusion parallel cards, with 22 achieving BGS 9.5 gem mint status.
  • Value Trends: The market value of these cards has fluctuated. In April 2023, a BGS 9.5 example sold for $24,600. This price reflects a decrease from the September 2022 sale at $40,800 but an increase from the June 2020 sale price of $11,100.
  • Investment Advice: Despite the recent decrease in value, the upward trend from 2020 indicates strong investment potential. Investors should watch the market closely and consider acquiring lower-grade examples, such as PSA 8 or BGS 9, for long-term investment opportunities. The rarity and unique design of these cards make them an attractive option for collectors and investors alike.

  • Value Fluctuation: The card’s value has seen significant appreciation. A PSA 8 version sold in August 2021 for $22,800. By April 2023, a BGS 9.5 example reached $34,200 at auction. Additionally, a BGS 9 mint condition card fetched $13,800 in June 2023.

Flair Showcase Legacy Collection Basketball Cards:

Between 1996 and 1999, Fleer produced the Legacy Collection parallels in their Flair Showcase sets. By 2000, the set’s name shifted to Fleer Showcase, still featuring Legacy Collection parallels.

Print runs varied each year: 1996 (/150), 1997 (/100), 1998 (/99), and 1999 (/20). Collectors especially cherish the 1996 version due to its debut status. For those eyeing a Michael Jordan Legacy card, only 1996 and 1997 sets feature him.

Three-Tier Layout

Flair Showcase cards consist of three tiers: Row 2 (Style), Row 1 (Grace), and Row 0 (Showcase). While non-Legacy Row 0 cards have a 1:24 pack insertion rate, the Legacy versions are exceedingly rare. Their distinct sparkle foil design is a collector’s dream.

Beckett Report: Legacy Collection cards, with their glossy finish, are notoriously tough to grade. Beckett has examined fifty-eight Jordan Row 0 Legacy cards: four at BGS 9.5, twenty-four at 9, thirteen at 8.5, and the rest at NM-MT 8 or lower.

Market Value: A BGS 9.5 Jordan Row 0 Legacy card was sold by PWCC Auctions in February 2023 for $38,400. Remarkably, the same card fetched $12,722 in February 2020.

These cards, with their distinctive oval die-cut design and dynamic in-game action shots, have since become legendary collectibles. Their rarity is emphasized by a 1:720 pack pull rate from the upscale E-X2001 product.

Beckett Report: Out of 100 Jordan Jambalaya cards graded by Beckett, the distribution is: one at 10, forty-three at 9.5, and thirty at mint 9. The most recent sale of a BGS 9.5 was through PWCC Auctions in October 2023, fetching $48,000.

Their rarity and condition sensitivity drive their value, even when ungraded. PSA has graded ten copies of Jordan’s ’98 Slam Bams, with four grading mint 9 and none higher. One of the four PSA 9 Jordan Slam Bams sold for a significant $63,440 in October 2023, down from $97,200 in September 2022 but remains highly valued compared to other Jordan cards.

1998 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems:

The Precious Metal Gems (PMGs) rank among the most coveted sports card parallels of all time. Renowned for their scarce availability and striking foil finish, PMGs are significant in the hobby of baseball, football and basketball card collecting. The 1998 edition marked the PMG’s second year, with each base card limited to 50 copies.

Beckett Report: Out of the seventeen 1998 PMG Michael Jordan cards graded by Beckett: two achieved a mint 9 status; eight were NM-MT+; four received NM-MT 8; and three were NM+ 7.5.

Sales Insights: Recent sales highlight the card’s fluctuating value. A BGS 8 fetched $120,000 in January 2023 at Goldin Auctions, while a PSA 7 commanded $192,000 in September 2022. Earlier, a BGS 8.5 sold for $24,000 in 2019 and an SGC Authentic went for $38,776 in 2020. 1997 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems:

One of the most prized Michael Jordan basketball cards, excluding autographs, game-used jerseys, or rookie cards, is the 1997 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Parallel. The inaugural year of the PMG in 1997 introduced both Red and Green foil cards. Each player is represented by 100 cards: 90 in Red and a scant 10 in Green. Given the Green variant’s extreme scarcity, it has fetched prices nearing $1 million. Irrespective of its condition, possessing one equates to having a substantial treasure.

Card Value Insights: The 1997 Michael Jordan PMG Red Parallel has seen soaring values, peaking at $564,000 in July 2022 for a BGS 8.5. More recently, a BGS 8 fetched $360,000 in June 2023, while September 2023 saw a PSA 4 attain $342,000 at Goldin Auctions. A BGS 7 also managed a notable $450,000 in June 2022.
